Less than 24 hours ago, TMC shared an important guide to help safeguard UK hobbyists and to support the legal coral trade in the UK. The report, a collaboration between the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association Ltd., EcoMarines, Tropical Marine Centre, JNCC, and the Border Force, is a comprehensive yet simple guide packed with valuable information to help you navigate the legalities of coral trade.
It is incredibly important that, rather than “trophy hunting”, ALL hobbyists are more than ever discerning in their choices when it comes to purchasing marine livestock and ensure that they DO NOT PURCHASE ORGANISMS (EVEN IF THERE IS SOME DOUBT AS TO THEIR IDENTITY) THAT COULD BE FROM RESTRICTED AREAS. As the guide explains, a number of LPS coral species from Northern Australia are particularly of concern, currently being banned from import into the UK.
There are plenty of people who may use the unethical harvest of such organisms to irrevocably damage the UK hobby, so let’s not give them that chance.
