It’s been a great two weeks for Hull, having been awarded The City of Culture for 2017 and now Hull’s biggest tourist attraction, The Deep, has been named as the world’s second best aquarium by a Canadian web site www.therichest.com.
The list includes aquariums in The Middle East, Japan, Spain, Singapore and the U.S. and describes The Deep as ‘not the most impressive in terms of size, but nevertheless, still one of the most impressive.’
Colin Brown, The Deep’s Chief Executive said “Clearly we are devastated to only be second … but I have an understanding Board of Trustees and they have agreed to give us one last chance to improve!
“Seriously, we would have been over the moon to make the top 10 at all, let alone be number 2.”
“There are many bigger aquariums but it does appear that the different approach we took in Hull seems to have made an impression with those compiling the list.”
The list describes The Deep as home to more than 3,500 different kinds of sea animals and creatures as a major tourist destination since it started its operations in 2002. It also notes that it is funded by the general public through admissions and plays an important role in marine research through its modern aquatic laboratories.
The website put the Dubai Aquarium at number one. The Dubai Aquarium and Science Center was part of the $20 Billion Dubai Mall development and boasts the largest acrylic window in the world. Third was the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta and fourth was the Aquadom in Berlin.
