There has been a story about jellyfish in the UK national press and television this week — and for once, it was not of the lurid “plague of jellyfish” variety.
The Guardian newspaper and BBC television websites carried the story in some detail, and included some brilliant video footage of a giant barrel jelly, measuring a metre across and weighing in at around 20kg, spotted in a Cornish estuary.
As with sharks, we all need to learn a good deal more about these creatures, which are fascinating and, for the most part, harmless to humans.
