The Sustainable Aquarium Industry Association (SAIA) says it is ending 2013 with celebrations: after 10 years of a convoluted and politically complex process, with heated debates and severe opposition, the West Hawaii Rules Package was signed into law by the Governor recently.
While West Hawaii has now an adequately managed aquarium fishery, SAIA says “We will learn in the article provided by our partner organization, LINI, that this is not quite the case in Indonesia. Many obstacles to sustainability in the marine aquarium trade and hobby, especially in the major source countries in SE Asia, most of them developing nations, persist and need a new way to be tackled. And more importantly, our support!”
