Natural Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: eastern Indian Ocean (Rowely Shoals, Scott Reef, and Ashmore Reef) and Indonesia
Depth Range: 1 – 38m
Species Notes & Captive Care Notes: the Azure Demoiselle is an Indo-West Pacific species that inhabits shallow lagoons and near shore coral reefs usually at depths of 1 – 13m. It grows to around 7cm maximum total body length. Small aggregations are often found among branching corals (Acropora sp.). This species is often confused with C. parasema, as it has similar yellow and blue coloration. Note however that C. parasema has blue anal and pelvic fins, while C. hemicyanea has yellow pelvic, anal fins and lower, rear part of the body. Although not regularly available, there are actually several other species in the ‘hemicyanea complex’ that look almost identical but can be identified by the colouration of their pelvic and anal fins. C. hemicyanea is one of the most readily available damsels and is usually well behaved if given enough space and added once any small, passive species have become established.
