Species Notes & Captive Care Notes: Choat’s wrasse is sometimes known as the Red Leopard or Red Flecked Wrasse and this species reaches a maximum size of around 7.5cm. This is a Western and South Western Pacific species which occurs in Eastern Australia and New Caledonian waters, including the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. In terms of natural habitat, it has been noted in channels and seaward reefs with rubble and sand patches, usually at a maximum of 30m depth. Similar in habit to M. bipartitus, this species exhibits an eye-catching pearl-white body colour, which is overlaid with red/orange blotches. On the head, the blotches fuse and in males there are green/blue/yellow striations along the lower jaw area. On the gill cover there is a prominent dark patch with yellow on the upper-edge. One of the less frequently available species, Choat’s Wrasse usually commands a relatively high price and is fairly hard to obtain in good condition.
