Scientific Name: Zebrasoma veliferum
Maximum Adult Size: 40cm
Natural Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean: Christmas Island and most of the East Indian region to South China Sea, Hawaii and Pitcairn Islands; north to Japan and Ogasawara Islands; south to western and eastern Australia; Replaced by Zebrasoma desjardinii in the Indian Ocean
Depth Range: 1 – 45m
Species Notes & Captive Care Notes: Very similar in appearance to Z. desjardinii, particularly when small, the Pacific Sailfin Tang occurs widely across the Pacific Ocean. This species grows up to a maximum of 40cm and thus requires a very large aquarium to be maintained long term. In it’s natural environment favoured haunts include lagoons and seaward reefs from the lower surge zone to a depth of at least 30m. With teeth that are slightly larger than other Zebrasoma sp., its natural diet is biased towards leafy macro algae.
