OFI Launches The Global Marine Aquarium Trade Dialogue 2026

Ornamental Fish International (OFI), in collaboration with Aquafauna Biosystems, is pleased to announce the launch of the Global Marine Aquarium Trade Dialogue 2026 (GMAT Dialogue), a new international online forum dedicated to fostering open, evidence-based discussions on the future of the marine aquarium trade that is to be held online on the 10th September 2026.

The GMAT Dialogue brings together a diverse range of stakeholders, including scientists, policymakers, conservation organisations, industry practitioners, coastal community representatives, and innovators from around the world. The Dialogue has been established to promote constructive engagement, strengthen collaboration, and encourage informed decision-making on issues shaping the future of the marine aquarium sector.

As the industry enters a defining decade, expectations surrounding sustainability, animal welfare, transparency, and community livelihoods continue to grow. At the same time, differing data sets, methodologies, and policy perspectives have contributed to fragmented narratives and uncertainty. The GMAT Dialogue seeks to bridge these gaps by providing a neutral, globally accessible platform where participants can share knowledge, examine scientific evidence, and explore practical solutions that support both healthy coral reef ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods.

The programme will feature keynote presentations by internationally recognised experts, regional perspectives from across the global supply chain, interactive panel discussions, and opportunities for open dialogue among participants. By bringing together voices from science, industry, government, and civil society, the Dialogue aims to improve understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the marine aquarium trade while identifying practical pathways towards a more sustainable and resilient future.

Importantly, the GMAT Dialogue is not intended to advocate for any single viewpoint. Rather, it is designed to encourage respectful dialogue, promote transparency, and facilitate evidence-based discussions that recognise the complexity of marine aquarium fisheries and the diverse communities that depend on them. Through greater collaboration and knowledge sharing, the Dialogue seeks to support reef-positive outcomes, responsible trade practices, and balanced policy development.

“Meaningful progress begins with meaningful dialogue,” said Jonathan Poh, Secretary General of Ornamental Fish International. “The marine aquarium trade encompasses conservation, science, livelihoods, animal welfare, and international commerce. Addressing these interconnected issues requires collaboration across sectors and a willingness to engage openly with evidence. The GMAT Dialogue provides an opportunity for stakeholders to come together, exchange perspectives, and work towards practical solutions that benefit both people and reefs.”

The Global Marine Aquarium Trade Dialogue 2026 reflects OFI’s ongoing commitment to advancing responsible, sustainable, and science-based practices within the ornamental aquatic industry while strengthening cooperation among all stakeholders involved in the marine aquarium trade.
